Volvo CE: Special Award for Innovations

Volvo Construction Equipment has won a Special Award for Innovation of Significant Merit for its new PL range of pipelayers. Volvo CE was presented with the BP award for its significant contribution to innovation related to cross-country onshore pipeline construction.

The PL range of pipelayers from Volvo is quite different to the traditional track-type tractors with side booms that the industry currently uses, whose original designs date back to the 1930s. These are patented adaptations of excavator-based machines integrated with the latest technology. The model range offers lift capacities up to 150 tones.

The excavator configuration allows the machines a 360-degree swing with full lifting performance and functionality at all radius positions – a solution unattainable with the traditional side booms. Volvo pipelayers offer the highest lift capacities resulting from wider gauge, lower centre of gravity, and boom mounting geometry inboard of the track frame, and closer to the machine’s centre-line. Superior stability combined with the Load Management System (LMS) offers ultimate safety. Volvo pipelayers are versatile. They can perform heavy lift applications besides pipe laying and can also be quickly converted to a conventional excavator.
