Similar New Jersey and Pennsylvania (USA) bills would allow police to fine people for driving with ice and snow on their vehicles that could fall off and hurt someone.
The proposals would not apply when the vehicle is parked or when the snow or ice storm begins while the motorist is on the road.
New Jersey already has stiff fines for drivers whose negligence in clearing their vehicles results in damage or injury. Non-commercial drivers are fined $200 to $1,000, commercial drivers $500 to $1,500.
New Jersey’s bill, A959, was referred to the Law and Public Safety Committee Jan. 10.
Pennsylvania’s bill would fine commercial drivers $200 to $1,000 for not clearing ice and snow and $1,000 to $1,500 if dislodged ice or snow causes injury or damage. That bill, SB 902, was referred to the Senate transportation committee Oct. 5.
